Love is friendship caught on fire

There I was standing in the middle of a wedding when the words coming from the man officiating the ceremony totally caught me by surprise. “Love is friendship caught on fire.” My eyes started to water and I quickly had to suppress the emotion because I don’t actually know the bride and groom, I’m not family, I’m not even a guest I was helping film the wedding and didn’t want to draw any attention to myself. I have to admit that I’m five months pregnant so emotions and hormones are running wild right now. I couldn’t get that quote to stop rattling in my head all night though. I finally had to look it up and although this wasn’t the exact quote that was used I fell in love with this one: “Love is friendship caught fire; it is quiet, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection, and makes allowances for human weaknesses. Love is content with the present, hopes for the future, and does not brood over the past. It is the day-in and day-out chronicles of irritations, problems, compromises, small disappointments, big victories, and working toward common goals. If you have love in your life, it can make up for a great many things you lack. If you do not have it, no matter what else there is, it is not enough.” by Laura Hendricks Now if you are at all in a bad mood, hate romance or don’t want to hear about love and the quote above didn’t stop you yet than stop reading this right now. I mean it… I’m about to get real mushy on you because the truth is I am in love. I’m not in the sweet honey moon obsessed with my husband love, I was once, but we’ve now graduated into the having babies, father of my children, provider of our family, can’t get enough of him love and its amazing. Not every day is blissful but there are blissful moments in our every day. From good morning kisses to dirty dishes, staying up late talking with a little one still in our bed and one on the way, yes I love my with Richie and this season that we are in. Are there things that I wish were different? Do we have lots to work on and improve in? YES! But like the quote above says “If you have love in your life, it can make up for a great many things you lack. If you do not have it, no matter what else there is, it is...

What are we so afraid of?

I don’t know what it is about ART but I’ve noticed lately that when it comes to “sharing” is a hard thing to do with other artist. Wither its ideas, techniques, resources or simply giving encouragement it is not easy. I hate to say it but I’m guilty of this. I don’t know what it is we are so afraid.. maybe we see each other as competition or we think if we tell people how we do what we do they will do it better. I’ve had so many people, artist, teachers and friends pour into me along the way and I want to do that for others. Imagine what it would look like to have a community of artist working together and collaborating on things instead of working against each other. I want to change and break out of this “my ideas are only mine” mindset. We should SHARE. We should share everything! Nothing would be lost by sharing ideas but it could result in some beautiful art. So if you’re an artist looking for inspiration or help I may not be your answer but I’d love to get coffee with you, share ideas and have a good talk! I’ll start by sharing a wonderful post I read today on “brush lettering.” People have asked me how to do it and basically this is the best step by step explanation I’ve read! enjoy!...

Help Heal the World

Last night Richie and I went to hear the president of Rescue Freedom speak about his experiences in the organization. WOW serisouly we were blown away. Rescue Freedom is an organization that helps women and children be saved out of Human Trafficking. The phrase that stood out to me again and again in his talk was how we are called to “help heal the world.” I immediately went home and wrote that phrase down.. “help heal the world.”  I’ve heard it a bunch of times but it meant something different now.  When I read those words I am reminded again and again to love and help others not only because its the right thing to do but because its what we are called to do. I’m going to put a  print of “help heal the world” on the Etsy shop and any money received from this print will be donated directly to Rescue Freedom. There is a 5k run coming up on July 4th to help raise funds and awareness for Rescue Freedom.  You can find out more info about that at http://www.newlife.tv/5k/. You should check out the organization...

You are my home

You are my home

“Home” was such a funny word for me growing up because my family moved so much.  I can’t close my eyes and picture a house when I think of my childhood home, I instead picture my family.  I see my brother and I riding bikes to and from school together or all of us sitting down to enjoy a meal at the end of the day.  Home.. to me its not a house, its where you’re with the ones you love. This week I’ve been visiting my family down in Arizona and for the first time I referred to Washington as my “home” instead of AZ. Weird! I have my own family now… I’m married with a toddler and own a sweet little house in Poulsbo.  It really is my home.. they really are my home and I love it! I sketched the words “You are my home” and created this design to remind myself that it really doesn’t matter where I am in life as long as I’m with the ones I love....

Kylie Sketches

Oh my word! I woke up last week to the sweet sound of my phone buzzing.  It was an alert from Etsy with a picture of a champagne bottle popping congratulating me on selling my first art print!  I set up an Etsy shop a few weeks ago with some of my sketches and art prints that can be digitally downloaded.   Now let’s stop right there and take a minute because that blows my mind in its self.  I upload my artwork on Etsy and if someone wants the print they pay a small price and get the digital files instantly to their computer so they can print it out and frame it themselves.  Etsy.. you’re so brilliant I could squeeze you! Anyway this whole thing has been challenging me to draw something every day wether I put it up or not I’m pushing myself creatively and that’s worth it!   My friends and family have started giving me projects here and there with different quotes, custom pieces and I’ve even been told to start writing my own quotes and then drawing them. Eeeek! I’m so excited I can’t even handle it, I mean not only am I doing something creative that I love but I’m also making money!  Ok I’m not rich or anything but the thought of someone wanting to pay money to hang my art in their home or at their office makes me smile a stupid little girl grin that I can’t get off my face. My whole goal in starting the Etsy shop was to help encourage others on a daily basis and what better way to do that than with art?  I know how challenging life can be… I’m a mom of a toddler and trying to balance life and two part time jobs.  Sometimes I just want a reminder that I’m doing a good job or that I’m loved. I named the shop Kylie Sketches because I wanted something super simple that gave the feel that its just one person doing some drawing and sharing them.  I think the shop name kind of nailed that perfect!  You can check out the shop at https://www.etsy.com/shop/KylieSketches...
